About Vidaara
A bench, five pairs of hands, and a lot of felt boards
Vidaara started as a table in a back room in Coimbatore, stringing bracelets for a neighbour's wedding. It is now a five-person workshop that still knots everything by hand — because the shortcut version does not last.
The making
What "handcrafted" means here
Every strand is knotted between beads. It takes about four times as long as simply threading them, and it is the reason a Vidaara necklace drapes rather than hangs, and why a snapped thread costs you one bead instead of the whole piece.
Stones are bought rough-graded and sorted in the workshop. Roughly one in nine is rejected for chips or colour drift. Clasps are gold-fill or sterling — never plated, because plating wears through at exactly the point you handle most.
Sort
Stones graded by tone on a felt board, chipped ones pulled.
Lay out
The full sequence is set out before a single knot is tied.
Knot
One knot between every bead, tightened against the stone.
Finish
Clasp crimped, piece worn for a day by the maker, then boxed.

Care & repairs
Everyday
Last thing on, first thing off. Perfume, hairspray and chlorine are what dull stones — not wear.
Storage
Flat, in the cotton pouch. Hanging a knotted strand for months stretches the silk.
Re-stringing
Send any piece back at any point in its life. We re-knot it free; you cover postage.
